Nearly every high-end consultation asks it: is Fine Paints of Europe worth the premium? It depends on your priorities, your timeline and where the paint will live, so here are the performance data, the cost math and the demands of Peninsula homes.

Fine Paints of Europe (FPE) is a Dutch manufacturer whose paint has more resin, more concentrated pigment and stricter quality control than mass-market brands. The result is better coverage, richer color, longer life and a finish even untrained eyes notice, at 2-3x the cost of premium conventional paints.

What Makes FPE Different

Most exterior paints contain 30-35% solids (the material that remains after the solvent evaporates). FPE formulations run 40-50% solids. This means:

  • Better coverage: Fewer coats needed for full hide
  • Thicker film: More material protecting the substrate
  • Richer color: More pigment per gallon
  • Longer life: More material to wear through

FPE also uses alkyd and urethane resins that resist UV degradation better than standard acrylics, retaining color and gloss longer in accelerated weathering tests.

The Cost Analysis

Factor Premium Conventional Fine Paints of Europe
Material cost per gallon $45-65 $95-140
Coverage per gallon 350-400 sq ft 400-450 sq ft
Typical lifespan 7-10 years 12-15 years
Cost per year (per 1000 sq ft) $13-19 $14-21

The lifespans in this table are typical ranges, and each depends on exposure, surface prep, the product and maintenance. This is general guidance, not a McDermaid warranty or guarantee.

Per year of service, FPE's premium narrows sharply because the longer lifespan offsets much of the upfront cost. On difficult exposures (west-facing walls, high-visibility trim), FPE can be more economical over time.

When FPE Makes Sense

High-Visibility Areas

Front entries, prominent trim and architectural details, the areas guests and passersby see first, benefit most. The depth of color and gloss difference is noticeable.

Luxury Interiors

In formal living rooms, dining rooms and primary suites, FPE's Hollandlac Traditional or Eco paints give a depth conventional paints don't match, especially in natural light.

Challenging Exposures

West-facing walls in Woodside, Portola Valley, and Hillsborough experience extreme UV exposure. On these elevations we have seen FPE hold up noticeably longer than conventional paints, which can show significant wear in as little as 5 to 7 years. How long any coating lasts depends on exposure, surface prep, the product and maintenance.

Heritage and Historic Homes

FPE's color accuracy, traditional pigments and time-tested chemistry suit historic restoration and preservation principles.

Peninsula Case Study

We painted an Atherton estate's west-facing entry wall with FPE Hollandlac Brilliant in 2012. In 2024, it still looked fresh, with minimal fading after years of intense afternoon sun. A comparable wall painted with premium conventional paint in 2017 required repainting in 2023. One wall is not a promise: results on any home depend on exposure, surface prep, the product and maintenance.

When Conventional Paint Works

FPE isn't the right choice everywhere:

  • Low-visibility areas: Sides and rear elevations where appearance matters less
  • Temporary solutions: Pre-sale painting where longevity isn't the priority
  • Tight budgets: When the premium simply isn't feasible
  • Standard interiors: Bedrooms, hallways, and utility spaces where finish quality is less critical

Quality conventional paints from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Dunn-Edwards perform well for most applications, provided prep and application are right.

The Application Factor

Application quality matters more than paint quality: a skilled painter with conventional paint will beat an unskilled painter with FPE.

FPE's higher solids change the technique: it levels differently, dries more slowly and is sensitive to conditions. Our painters are trained on it as part of our certification as Fine Paints of Europe approved applicators.

Our Recommendation

For most Peninsula homes, we recommend a hybrid approach:

  • FPE for: Front entry, prominent trim, high-visibility details, luxury interiors, challenging exposures
  • Premium conventional for: Secondary elevations, standard interiors, budget-conscious projects

That puts FPE where it matters most while controlling overall cost. We walk through these tradeoffs openly in consultation.

FPE is worth it where longevity, finish quality and appearance matter most; elsewhere, quality conventional paint is excellent value. The job is matching product to application, and we help every client do that.

"The question isn't whether Fine Paints of Europe is expensive. It's whether the long-term math works in your favor."
