What the certification means

A house built before 1978 may have lead-based paint, and the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule says the firm working on it must be certified. The rule is there to keep lead dust away from the people who live in the house during a renovation, children under six most of all.

McDermaid is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm. Our crews are trained in lead-safe work practices, and we follow the RRP Rule on every pre-1978 job.

Lead paint on the Peninsula

How common it is.

Lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978, but an estimated 37 million homes in the United States still contain lead paint hazards. Homes built before 1950 are the most likely, and there are many of them in Professorville, Crescent Park and the other established Peninsula neighborhoods.

The RRP Rule  ·  Triggers

When RRP Applies

The RRP Rule applies to renovation work on pre-1978 housing when:

  • The work disturbs more than 6 square feet of interior painted surface
  • The work disturbs more than 20 square feet of exterior painted surface
  • The work involves window replacement or demolition

On those jobs the firm has to follow RRP work practices and give you the EPA’s lead hazard information pamphlet before work starts.
