No. 02 / Scope
What C-33 covers
C-33 authorizes paint, varnish, shellac, stain, and other decorative finishes on interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures, including:
- Interior and exterior painting of residential structures
- Surface preparation including scraping, sanding, and priming
- Application of stains, varnishes, and clear finishes
- Wallpaper and decorative covering installation
- Wood finishing and refinishing
- Caulking and sealing in conjunction with painting work

Why to ask for it
In California, any construction job of $500 or more (labor and materials together) needs a state license. A C-33 means the painter has met the CSLB’s requirements for experience, an exam and a bond.
The license bond gives you financial recourse in a dispute, and the CSLB sets insurance requirements the contractor has to meet.
One license, two classifications
Why we also carry B-2.
C-33 covers painting and decorating. For the multi-trade work around the paint (drywall, finish carpentry, tile, siding), McDermaid also holds the B-2 Residential Remodeling classification on the same license. Structural, electrical and plumbing systems work is performed by appropriately licensed contractors.
